Hip Hop and What it Means to Me

I love music almost as much as I love money. I listen to only hip hop. I like to listen to something that I can dance to. Something that I can bob my head to in the car.

Hip hop is about so much and is so important to our culture. Hip hop has lost its way since its origination. Artists today don't have meaning to their music. They lack self expression and just talk about how much money they don't really have. They rap about money sex and getting high when hip hop is so much more than that. Hip hop is about expressing what the world refuses to hear.

To have a good song an artist needs to have two things, talent and a good beat. To have talent means that you have the ability to rap to the beat and have something meaningful to say. In hip hop in order to have a true fan base the artist must be lyrical. The use of metaphors and an extensive vocabulary helps the talent. Many artists don't realize and understand that just because you have a good hook means you have a good song. I have heard songs where the hook was good and catching but the verse had nothing to do with the hook or title of the song.

A good beat varies from person to person. To me if it has a good amount of bass, not too much and not too little, a good base line and a variety of other instruments it could possibly be good. It has to sound right and fit together. A beat is a composition. If you can appreciate Beethoven, Mozart and other classical composers you can recognize a good beat.

To me the greatest rapper alive is Lil' Wayne. I chose him because he is lyrical. He uses metaphors that most people don't even understand. Thats what I like about him, he makes you think.  He has something meaningful to say. Yes he has songs that are about money, sex and getting high, I like most of those too. But overall he is expressing himself. He can truly say that when hip hop died he brought it back to life. He has a true talent, a poetic talent.
